Dermabond

Dermabond is a versatile line of topical skin adhesives that includes Dermabond Advanced, Dermabond Mini, and the Dermabond Prineo skin closure system. These products are specifically designed to ensure secure skin closures, which are essential for successful surgical outcomes and enhancing patient satisfaction. The Dermabond range addresses a variety of clinical requirements, making it a comprehensive solution for wound management.

Dermabond products have been proven to strengthen wound closures, provide effective microbial barriers, inhibit various infection-causing bacteria, and enhance patient comfort. With nearly two decades of trusted use, Dermabond is the only topical skin adhesive backed by more randomized controlled trials than the top six competitors combined. The Dermabond Prineo system uniquely combines 2-octyl cyanoacrylate with self-adhering mesh, backed by over eight US patents.

Manufactured by Ethicon, a Johnson & Johnson company with extensive surgical expertise, Dermabond is part of a broader portfolio that includes a range of surgical solutions such as shears, trocars, tissue sealers, hernia repair products, staplers, skin adhesives, and sutures.

Applications of Dermabond Products:

  • Dermabond Advanced: Best suited for open hernia repairs and mid to large lacerations.
  • Dermabond Mini: Ideal for small lacerations and minimally invasive procedures.
  • Dermabond Prineo Skin Closure System (22 cm): Highly effective in orthopedic surgeries including total knee arthroplasty, total hip arthroplasty, and spinal surgeries, showing a strength increase of 33% over staples and 40% over 4-0 sutures.
  • Dermabond Prineo Skin Closure System (60 cm): Recommended for abdominoplasty, breast reconstruction, sternotomy, and brachioplasty procedures.

Both Dermabond Advanced and the Dermabond Prineo system have demonstrated 99% effectiveness through 72 hours in vitro against common organisms responsible for surgical site infections (SSIs), such as Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecium.
